What is tooth whitening? Tooth whitening is becoming a much more common practice in the past few years. It is a relatively inexpensive way to brighten teeth that are discolored, stained or have been darkened because of injury. Bleaching may be done completely in the dental office or the dentist may give you a system to use at home.
How long does it take and how long before I need it again? In the office, it takes from 30 minutes to an hour. A chemical solution is applied to the teeth and a special light may be used at intervals to speed up the process. If you're doing at-home bleaching, you will receive a custom-fitted mouth appliance that holds the bleaching gel. It takes about 2 weeks, done every night or day. The effects of bleaching may last for several years, however, beverages and foods such as coffee, tea and berries can stain teeth again. You may need touch-up treatments.
Will bleaching work on all darkened teeth? No. If your teeth are stained due to past use of tetracyclines, they are permanently dark and the bleaching process will not affect the teeth. Veneers or bonding may be needed at that point.
How much does it cost? Talk with your dentist. Most times, bleaching is less-expensive than even a couple of veneers.
All whitening treatments include a complimentary consultation.
